Diet Week One: Hunger Should Be A Murder Defense

In the first week I’ve lost 14.8 pounds… and all my friends!

Okay, maybe I’m being a bit dramatic on the friend thing. The truth is I’ve been very grumpy but week one was not too bad. I also have had the hiccups a lot this week but that could just be my stomach trying to suck food out of the atmosphere.

Being on a diet is hard but it is a lot easier if you have a partner. Luckily for me, my wife, Jen reached her tipping point at the same time I did and so we are going through this together. She is down 7.5 pounds this week – and is a little pissed that I lost so much more.

So what are we doing? Simply put, “eat less, move more, and drink a lot of water.” It seems trite but it seems to be really working well.

To eat less, I am trying to stay below 2,000 calories a day – Jen is staying under 1,600. To do this my meals look like this:

Meal Plan

  • Monday and Tuesday
  • Breakfast: Coffee with 1/4 cup of Hazelnut creamer and a muffin (509 cal)
  • Lunch: Replacement Shake (like slim-fast 180 cal)
  • Dinner: 12″ Subway Black Forest Ham on wheat (660 cal)… Let’s face it, that pedophile, Jerrod was on to something!
  • Snacks: Boiled eggs, apples, carrots, etc (around 350 cal per day)

Wednesday had a dinner change. Jen made a Chicken and Shrimp Skillet (Link) where she substituted the lemons with cherry tomatoes and add fresh parsley for presentation. A heaping 2.5 cups of this was 935 cal.

Now on Thursdays and Fridays, I work out of town and have lunch out with my coworkers. This made a challenge.

  • Thursday
  • Breakfast: Coffee with 1/4 cup of Hazelnut creamer and shake (like slim-fast for total 320 cal)
  • Lunch: Chicken Salad Sandwich and Doritos (740 cal)
  • Dinner: Subway Salad and Ham Wrap (820 cal)
  • Snacks: Chips (120 cal) I had to throw away 15% of the chips but it kept me in my 2000 cal limit.
  • Friday
  • Breakfast: Coffee with 1/4 cup of Hazelnut creamer and a muffin (509 cal)
  • Lunch: Chicken Salad Sandwich and Doritos (740 cal)
  • Dinner: 12″ Subway Black Forest Ham on wheat (660 cal)
  • Snacks: apples ( 90 cal)

I found that it helped to plan meals out ahead of time. This helped me to save enough calories for a nice supper.

  • Saturday
  • Breakfast: Coffee with 1/4 cup of Hazelnut creamer and a muffin (509 cal)
  • Lunch: 3 boiled eggs (210 cal)
  • Dinner: I slow cooked a Cuban roast all day and then made a Cuban sandwich with 7 oz of meat for (860 cal) plus a bag of baked lays for another (140 cal)
  • Snacks: an Apple, some radishes, and 2tbsp of low fat 1000 island (134 cal in all)
  • Sunday
  • Breakfast: Coffee with 1/4 cup of Hazelnut creamer and a boiled egg (208 cal)
  • Lunch: Half of a Cuban sandwich with 3oz of meat (397 cal)
  • Dinner: We had so much pork left and it was so good, so another full sandwich with only 3 oz of meat plus two bags of chips (877 cal)
  • Snacks: Apple, half a muffin, and another cup of coffee (395 cal)

Other than my morning coffee, I also only drank water… and lot’s of it. I won’t post all of my meals each week but I thought it might be note worthy to tell what I ate this week. I also weighed every day but I plan to only weigh on Mondays from here on out (if I can stand it).

Exercise/Exorcise… same difference really!

Jen and I walked at the park at an average speed of 3.2mph:

  • Monday 1 mile
  • Tuesday 1.5 miles
  • Wednesday 1 mile
  • Thursday RAIN
  • Friday 1 mile
  • Saturday RAIN
  • Sunday RAIN

We’ve actually been going to the park twice a week for the past month but now we are stepping it up (no pun intended).

Why Now

I started this diet not because I am fat or because that picture of me in the overalls made me die a little on the inside, but because I have high blood pressure and other health issues.

It was that same reason I had my DNA checked on Ancestry.com. Since my mom was adopted I had no idea what my family medical history was. However, Friday my DNA test came back and the top match was my mom’s long lost brother. I had hoped to find out that my lost relatives were a super human race of people who all lived into their late 90’s. Instead it turns out my family medical history is pretty bad and most seem to have died before they hit 70 – of course I’ve only exchanged one email and there is much more to learn.

For now, I will focus on the positive – I am down 14.8lbs! (399.8) I know week two will probably slow down significantly but I am resolved to stick to it.
