Designing With Sketchup For The First Time

Quotes

“Never fear moving slowly, only fear not moving forward.” That is a quote from a fortune cookie that I have posted in my workshop. Sure it’s a little sad that I get validation from stale take-out desserts but I have no shame.

This week’s blog will be a bit short, since I’m still drowning in the quicksand that is my shop remodel. I can’t believe how long this project is taking and how much it’s taking out of me. There’s actually a small spot on the right side of my ribs that doesn’t hurt – however, the rest of me feels like I’ve been beaten with a rubber hose. I refuse to believe this is due to my age and instead blame it on being so out of shape. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Diet

I haven’t mentioned my diet since April, for the obvious reason that I fell off the wagon in April. At that time I was down 35lbs and up to 26 hives – now I am only down 10lbs and only have 24 hives. That is still a loss of 10lbs and a gain of 9 hives for the year – it’s important to spin these set backs into a positive light. My delusions know no bounds.

So today, I returned to counting calories and hope to finish the year off better than I started. I really need to get some of the weight off since I’m planning on doing some home renovations this winter and will need the extra energy. With the weather finally cooling off, I’ll start back walking at the track too.

Sketchup

I made my first drawing in Sketchup and my level of accomplishment is disproportionately high.

It was just a simple 24x24x24 box that I will attach wheels to, to store tools while I finish the remodel. I plan to make four of them.

There are lots of YouTube videos out there on Sketchup and I plan to watch a lot more of them but I started with this one Making A Planter On SketchUp | SketchUp For Woodworking Tutorial by Woodbrew. It was a simple lesson but really helped get me started.

My first drawing was also simple but the act of drawing it was very instructive and I look forward to designing much more complex designs in the future. That being said, even this simple blueprint will help to maximize my productivity. Yesterday, I found myself wondering around my shop like a nonagenarian that had lost his car in the Walmart parking lot as I tried to design something in my head with the supplies I had on hand. Now I have a plan.

Well Loyal Readers, thanks so much for stopping by today and reading this drivel. I’ll try to do something this week worth your time next week.

I love your posts and have decided (therefore it must be done) that you simply must make more of them, despite the rubber hose of age.. err I mean remodeling.. beating you senseless.

I have a AutoCAD background… though I’m not sure that helps or hurts.

  3. Just take one day at a time, it’s all Amy of us can do really!! In regard to the shed cleanup – we went through so much when we started ours a couple of years ago… for John it was as much about confronting past fears, dreams and people too as it was about getting things organised. There’s many layers to this clutter thing and that’s why it’s a bit emotionally, as well as physically, draining!! Hang in there and good luck with the weight loss – you deserve to be your best self and to feel well and strong as we all do!! Thank you for posting,
